A devotee watches over the crowd of thousands gathered at Wat Bang Phra for the annual Sak Yant festival. 'Sak yant' is the Thai term for the special tattoos said to have mystical powers and ward off physical harm, give good luck and heal. At the festival, those with the tattoos may enter a trance and act out the characteristics of the sacred animals inked onto their skin. The possessions seemed to occur in waves, with dozens of men seemingly taken by their spirits within seconds of one another. For this reason, emergency personnel and volunteers congregate at the front of the temple to protect the crowd from the violent tendencies of the possessed and to protect the possessed from themselves.
